Hello, I'm asking for a friend that would like to buy a Macintosh laptop. She is doing design work, and needs to use AutoCAD (or a similair application). I am pleased to list Paul Munford's blog The CAD Setter Out as an affiliate site of Lee Mac Programming. Paul's blog is packed with useful information on AutoCAD and Inventor, including a cornucopia of tips, tricks and tutorials exuding Paul's evident enthusiasm for everything CAD related.
You can insert any drawing file as an external reference or xref in the current drawing.
When you attach a drawing file as an xref, you link that referenced drawing to the current drawing. Any changes to the referenced drawing are displayed in the current drawing when it is opened or reloaded.
A drawing file can be attached as an xref to multiple drawings at the same time. Conversely, multiple drawings can be attached as referenced drawings to a single drawing.
Tools for Attaching Xrefs
You can use several methods to attach an xref:
Click Tools menuPalettesReference Manager.
Click Tools menuPalettesReference Manager.
At the Command prompt, enter EXTERNALREFERENCES.
At the Command prompt, enter XATTACH.
The saved path used to locate the xref can be a relative (partially specified) path, the full path, or no path.
If an xref contains any variable block attributes, they are ignored.
Receive Notification of Attached Xrefs
When one or more xrefs are not found or if any of the xrefs need reloading, a balloon message is displayed near the lower-left corner of the drawing area. Click the link in the balloon message to display the External References palette.
Detaching Referenced Drawings
To completely remove DWG references (xrefs) from your drawing, you need to detach them rather than erase them.
Erasing xrefs does not remove, for example, layer definitions associated with those xrefs. Using the Detach option removes the xrefs and all associated information.
Highlight External References in a Drawing
To find an external reference in a complex drawing, select an item in the External References palette to highlight all visible instances in the drawing. Conversely, select an external reference in the drawing to highlight its name in the External References palette.
Note: The ERHIGHLIGHT system variable controls whether referenced objects are highlighted. You can turn highlighting off to improve performance.
Control the Properties of Referenced Layers
You can control the visibility, color, linetype, and other properties of an xref's layers and make these changes temporary or permanent. If the VISRETAIN system variable is set to 0, these changes apply only to the current drawing session. They are discarded when you end the drawing session, or when you reload or detach the xref.
You can also control the fade display of the DWG xref. The XDWGFADECTL system variable defines the fade percentage for all DWG xrefs.
Xref Clipping Boundaries
Drawings can include xrefs that are clipped. If you want to see the clipping boundary, you can turn on the XCLIPFRAME system variable.
Attachments from Educational Products
If you open, insert, or attach an xref from an Autodesk Educational Product, the drawings you plot contain the following banner: “PRODUCED BY AN AUTODESK EDUCATIONAL PRODUCT.”

Related Tasks
From the Command prompt, manages drawings inserted as external references (xrefs).
The following prompts are displayed.
Enter an Option
?—List Xrefs
Lists the DWG reference name, path, and type and the number of DWG references currently attached to your drawing.
Bind
Text spammer for mac. Converts a specified DWG reference into a block, making it a permanent part of the drawing.
The xref-dependent named objects, such as layer names, of the former xref are added to your drawing. In each xref-dependent named object, the vertical bar (|) is replaced with three new characters: a number (usually 0) between two dollar signs ($). The number is increased if the same name already exists in the current drawing.
Detach
Free text to speech softawre for mac. Detaches one or more DWG references from your drawing, erasing all instances of a specified xref and marking the xref definition for deletion from the definition table. Only the xrefs attached or overlaid directly to the current drawing can be detached; nested xrefs cannot be detached.
Path
Displays and edits the path name associated with a particular DWG reference. This option is useful if you change the location of or rename the drawing file associated with the xref.
Pathtype
Specifies whether the path is relative or absolute (full).
Edit xref name(s) to edit path type. Enter the name of the xrefs that you want to modify. You can specify multiple xrefs using the same wildcard characters used to sort layer lists.
New path type. Specify Full, Relative, or None.
Full uses an absolute path that includes a local hard drive letter, a URL to a website, or a network server drive letter.
Relative assumes the current drive letter or the folder of the host drawing.
Unload
Unloads the selected DWG references.
A marker is left in place of the xref so that it can be reloaded later.
Reload
Reloads one or more DWG references. This option reloads and displays the most recently saved version of that drawing.
If the program encounters an error while reloading, it ends XREF and undoes the entire reloading sequence.
Overlay
Displays the Enter Name of File to Overlay dialog box (a standard file selection dialog box). If you reference a drawing that contains an overlaid xref, the overlaid xref does not appear in the current drawing.
Unlike blocks and attached xrefs, overlaid xrefs cannot be nested. If another person is currently editing the xref file, the program overlays the most recently saved version.
If the xref you specify is not already overlaid, a new xref is crated, using the name of the referenced file.
If FILEDIA is set to 0, the following prompt is displayed:
Autocad Xref Tutorial
Enter Name of File to Overlay.
You can enter a tilde (~) to display a dialog box.
Attach
Displays the External Reference dialog box, if a DWG reference is selected, or the Select Reference File dialog box, if no DWG reference is selected. See XATTACH.
If you reference a drawing that contains an attached xref, the attached xref appears in the current drawing. Like blocks, attached xrefs can be nested. If another person is currently editing the xref file, the most recently saved version is attached.
Specify Insertion Point
Specify a point or enter an option
Scale
Sets the scale factor. All X and Y dimensions of the xref are multiplied by the X and Y scale factors. The xref is rotated by the specified angle, using the insertion point as the center of rotation.
X, Y, and Z
Sets X, Y, and Z scale factors.
X Scale Factor. Defines X, Y, and Z scale factors for the xref.
Corner. Defines the X and Y scales at the same time, using the insertion point and another point as the corners of a box, and then defines the Z scale.
Rotate
Sets the angle of insertion for the xref.
PScale
Android speak to text app. Sets the scale factor for the X, Y, and Z axes to control the display of the xref as it is dragged into position.
PX, PY, and PZ
Sets the X, Y, and Z axes to control the display of the xref as it is dragged into position.
Autocad For Mac Xref Is Textnow
PRotate
Sets the rotation angle of the xref as it is dragged into position.
